When working with these precious antique pieces I always try to minimise the cutting and to use zero waste techniques and theres no better archetypal garment than a kaftan for inspiration! My take on this ancient principle is to add pockets and a neck line that works with the given material.
Kaftan 001 is made from an antique hand embroidered table cloth on plain pure mid-weight linen. I’ve followed the placement of the initials ‘MC’ to designate the length of the front and back (bit longer at the back) Simple v neckline is faced with fine napkins and the pockets are just int he most useful and comfortable place. Comfort, elegance and function are my three must haves in any garment and this one really has all three to the max!
